What Is A Cover Letter and Should I Write One?

Dear Career Consultant…

I am applying for a job and it has an optional document section that includes a cover letter. What exactly is a cover letter and should I include one with the application if it says optional?

Dear student…

A cover letter is a one-page document that explains why and how you are qualified for the job you are applying for. Think of it as an extension of your resume. A resume has bullet points, right?  A cover letter allows for more explanation (a.k.a stories) about the skills you mention in your bullet points. You aren’t just copying and pasting what is on your resume, but rather describing actual examples and tying it back to what the job is asking for.

Should you write one if it is an optional document? YES. 100% YES.

If it came down to you and another candidate, and you wrote a letter and they didn’t… who do you think will stand out a little more? I can’t say writing one will guarantee you the job in this situation, but just the mere fact you wrote one shows the extra work and commitment you are already portraying! So why not give yourself that leg up in the job search??
