Do you know who the largest employer in the United States is?
No, not Walmart, or McDonalds, or Amazon.
It’s the United States, aka Federal, government. Every day, their website (USAJobs) posts hundreds of positions in all sorts of diverse fields, including jobs related to your major. Local job-seekers tend to ignore the possibilities, though, because there is an erroneous notion that all of the work will be located in Washington, D.C. And while a fair amount of positions ARE in the nation’s capital, there are plenty of opportunities outside of the Beltway.
Obtaining a position in the federal government is very different from simply posting your resume on Linked In. The Career Connections Center offers guidance with the process. And, if you’re a student or a new graduate with a documented disability, the Career Connections Center at TWU can assist you in reaching out to federal recruiters through the Department of Labor’s Workforce Recruitment Program. Applications for the Workforce Recruitment Program open on August 26.
Who can apply to the Workforce Recruitment Program?
Students and recent graduates:
a) with a disability and are eligible under the Schedule A hiring authority (meaning, students documented through the Office for Students with Disabilities. This office can assist with the Schedule A letter)
b) who are a U.S. Citizen or national (residents of American Samoa and Swains Island)
c) who are enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program on a substantially full-time basis OR have graduated with a degree on or after April 1, 2022.
How can you apply?
- Visit WRP.gov and click “Students Register Now!” between August 26 and October 15, 2024.
- Complete the application as early as possible, because it takes time to get it approved and into the system.
- All materials (transcripts, Schedule A letter) must be received by October 17, 2024.
- New and returning WRP applicants must register and complete an application each year to continue to participate.
- Please use a computer or tablet to register and apply, NOT a cell phone.
