Student Success Story: Lillian Tong

It has been such an honor to have been selected for the Urban Fellows Program! Through this program, I was able to do incredible and impactful internship projects at The Harris Center for Mental Health and IDD. With this award, I was able to complete my research on a Medical-Legal Partnership (MLP) framework to connect patients to free and affordable legal services within the clinic. Additionally, I created a Community Resource Tracker on Excel for Care Coordinators to facilitate efficient referrals for underserved patients. These resources include housing, food, clothing, educational trainings (ESL, GED, & finance classes), emergency health services, specialty care, transportation, and vocational training all over the Houston area. While I am not completely done with my internship yet, I am working on creating educational training for the team on Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) and a solid process for generating monthly reports on the team’s patient contacting progress and comparing it their metrics for funding. The Urban Fellows Program has truly relieved me of financial burden. With the help of this program, I have been able to focus and apply my privileged learning from my MHA & MBA graduate studies to address social and economic health factors that affect the patients’ physical and mental health. I am sincerely grateful to the Urban Fellows Program and Dr. Bush for their support in helping me help others! – Lillian Tong
