School Counselor for Private Schools. This position is a Title I position, providing support to private schools within the school district.
The professional counselor is a student advocate, leader, collaborator, and a systems change agent. Counselors support students in the areas of academic achievement, career, and social/emotional development ensuring today’s students become productive, well-adjusted adults. School Counselors uphold the ethical and professional standards of ASCA and other applicable professional counseling associations and promote the development of the school counseling program.
Student Services staff regularly examine how their personal experiences and biases impact their ability to effectively serve all students. They possess a deep understanding of the systemic biases within the education system which serve to perpetuate inequities for some students and families.
They understand their role as a change agent and work with other staff, students, and community to redesign the system in a manner which actively repays the educational debt owed to historically marginalized students and families.
Training and Licensure:
- Master’s degree in Counseling.
- Valid Wisconsin teaching certificate: School Counselor
- Minimum GPA of 2.75 on a 4.0 grading system in degree coursework.
- Commitment to social justice and culturally and linguistically responsive practices
- Bilingual candidates (Spanish/English) are strongly preferred.
Essential Job Functions:
Communication and Collaboration
•Establish rapport with parents, teachers, administrators, and other relevant individuals.
•Build effective collaborative relationships with students, staff, administration, families and community members and agencies.
•Collaborate to help students establish goals, develop and use planning skills.
•Implement an effective referral process with administrators, teachers, parents, and other school personnel.
•Support and collaborate in other school programs.
Assessment
•Along with stakeholders, use evaluation data from the counseling program to make decisions regarding revisions to the school counseling program when necessary.
•Use data to advocate for systemic change in response to the changing needs of the school and community, creating an optimal learning environment.
•Develop appropriate interventions for students as needed and monitor student progress in multiple ways.
Program Planning & Management
•Plan, organize and deliver the school counseling program.
•Prioritize tasks and manage time effectively in order to meet the needs of students, staff, and administrators.
•Assist in the implementation of school screenings, programs, interventions, and progress monitoring as part of the student services team.
•Serve as a resource in positive universal behavior practices.
Program Delivery
•Develop and/or utilize materials and instructional strategies to meet student needs and school goals and teaches the counseling curriculum units effectively.
•Encourage staff involvement to ensure the effective implementation of the counseling curriculum.
•Counsel individual students and groups of students with identified needs/concerns.
•Promote equity, access, and academic success for every student.
•Organize and promote educational and career success, which may include student choice of classes and special programs.
•Utilize effective interventions by applying culturally responsive, trauma-sensitive, and evidence-based interventions that support student success within a multilevel system of support.
•Serve as a member of school safety team or response crisis team, to provide support and assistance to students and families as they navigate crisis and emergency situations.
