Data Scientist

ORISE fellowship opportunities are available with the Office of Innovation, Development, Evaluation, and Analytics (IDEA), Division of Global Migration & Quarantine (DGMQ) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Atlanta, GA. This is a full-time, one-year, stipend-supported opportunity that may be renewed for an additional year. Start date is flexible but no later than June 30, 2021.

IDEA’s mission is to deliver insights and solutions to support DGMQ by leveraging an agile team with focused resources and specialized skillsets in analytics, partnership development, evaluation, and innovation. We are creating a new data science team that will study globally mobile populations to enhance situational awareness, scientific understanding, and decision-making for CDC’s COVID-19 response.

We seek ORISE fellows to receive the following data science training opportunities:

You will learn how to:

· Lead statistical analyses of complex research projects

· Apply advanced statistical, data science, and predictive modeling techniques

· Communicate modeling results to IDEA team and DGMQ leadership

· Write and publish analyses in scientific peer-reviewed journals

· Help DGMQ understand the principles and math behind advanced methodology to drive organizational buy-in

· Identify novel or obscure problems and be versatile and innovative in adapting and modifying precedents, methods, and techniques

· Assess feasibility, effectiveness, and necessity of unusual approaches and identify potential benefits

· Communicate research and results to leadership and other project stakeholders, including non-technical audiences

Ideal qualifications/experience include:

· PhD with a quantitative focus

· Working with disparate and messy datasets

· Knowledge and application of advanced mathematical and statistical theories, principles, concepts, and practices to public health data

· Intermediate experience with R and RStudio

· Creating static and interactive visualizations and knowledge of visualization best practices

· Communicating with technical and non-technical audiences

· Enjoys collaborative work

· Interpersonal skills to establish and maintain effective working relationships, overcome skepticism, and gain cooperation

· Experience designing projects and analyses to address public health questions, including hypothesis generation, study design, statistical/mathematical modeling development, and interpretation and presentation of results

Your statement of interest should address your desire to solve public health challenges of globally mobile populations as well as explain how this fellowship opportunity will help you learn to solve those problems. Organizational Description:

This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the US Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment can be up to one year but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE, or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.
