SF Rec and Park is continuously hiring 3279 Recreation Leaders to help us with programming or acting as assistance at our various facilities throughout the City (including seasonal Day Camp programs).

These positions work as-needed, and are temporary exempt, as-needed/seasonal appointments without city employee benefits. Incumbents may only be scheduled to work certain quarters/semesters depending on the operational needs of the Department. Work assignments may vary depending on the needs of the Department. Some positions may require working rotating shifts, evenings, weekends, and/or holidays.

These as-needed/seasonal, temporary exempt seasonal appointments cannot exceed six (6) months or 1,040 hours (note: an initial threshold of 960 hours may be applied). Exempt employees are considered to be “at will” and serve at the discretion of the General Manager. All as-needed/seasonal vacancies in this class will include this pool of applicants. NOTE: Successful candidates may NOT be guaranteed specific job placements, work site locations or fixed hours. The Department may determine that some candidates must call for daily assignments based on business operational needs.

POSITION DESCRIPTION: The three levels are summarized below:

Level I Under supervision of the Facility Coordinator, Recreation Supervisor or Park Service Area Manager, the Recreation Leader performs facility monitoring work, light office tasks, customer service duties, set up and take down of tables and chairs and occasional janitorial tasks; assists with program delivery based upon interest and skills, and performs related duties as required.

Minimum requirements

1. Possession of a High School Diploma or GED and

2. 500 hours of recreation experience delivering instructions/programs

Level II Under supervision of the Program Coordinator, Recreation Supervisor or Park Service Area Manager, the Recreation Leader is responsible for delivery of recreation programs and activities. May also be responsible for the set up and take down of tables and chairs and occasional janitorial tasks; and performs related duties as required.

Minimum requirements

Level II

1. Possession of a High School Diploma or GED and

2. 1,000 hours of direct experience delivering recreation, cultural or athletic instructions/programs.

Level III Under supervision of the Program Coordinator, Recreation Supervisor or Park Service Area Manager, the Recreation Leader is responsible for the delivery of all Certified recreation, leisure and sport programs and activities in which the Recreation and Parks Department require the employee to be certified. May also be responsible for the set up and take down of tables and chairs and occasional janitorial tasks; and performs related duties as required.

Minimum requirements

Level III

1. Possession of a High School Diploma or GED and

2. 1,000 hours of direct experience delivering recreation, cultural or athletic instructions/programs and

3. Possession of a certification in the specific programming field which is issued by a recognized professional organization (substitutions subject to approval: a Master degree in the applicable field, teaching credential in that area, and/or equivalent professional work in the specific programming field designated by the Recreation and Park Department.)

There are four (4) main competency areas and one (1) support services area in which as-needed/seasonal 3279 Recreation Leaders are needed. The following are brief descriptions of each area and examples of the types of programming provided in each one:

Cultural Arts consists of Visual, Performing, Digital & Professional arts including animation, ceramics, computer arts, crafts, creative writing, dance, digital audio, deejaying, drawing, fashion, film & video, graphic design, installation art, multimedia, music, painting, photography, printmaking, radio & internet broadcasting, robotics, science & technology, sculpture, sound design, songwriting, street art, textiles, theater, woodworking & urban gardening.

Community Service consists of Early Childhood Education, After-School, Teens, Older Adults and Adaptive Recreation (People with Disabilities). This area is where recreation and human services intersect by providing programs and services to meet the needs of people at every stage of development. We also adapt all the Department’s programs and services to include people with disabilities – most recently blind, visually impaired, deaf, hearing impaired and children with autism.

Leisure Services includes Fitness: aerobics, yoga, pilates, zumba, fitness and dance; Waterfront Sports: sailing, kayaking, paddling, surfing and fishing; Outdoors: camping, back packing, eco-adventures, rock climbing, nature exploration, and geocaching; Extreme Sports: skating, BMX, mountain bikes, and ski/snow boarding; Non-traditional: Cooking, Martial Arts, RC Cars and Boats, and LGBTQ programming.

Sports & Athletics includes the following activities and camps: Baseball, softball, boxing, flag football, golf, RollerSoccer, soccer, futsol, tennis, track & field, volleyball, etc.

Recreation Resources and Permits serves in the following functions: Class (sfreconline.org) registration, recreation and event logistic support, facility monitoring, open and close facility, issue permits, etc.

License and Certification: It is intended that at a future point, all employees must possess a certification for First Aid/CPR.

GENERAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES: Ability to investigate and analyze situations, plan and organize research; ability to speak and write effectively; ability to follow instructions and to maintain working relations with fellow employees and the public. Each individual assignment may require different knowledge, skills, and/or abilities.
