About the Opportunity

HIRO is a revolutionary nature-based start-up harnessing ancient technology — mighty mycelia — to help solve the global plastic crisis. Our first product is a baby diaper that returns to the earth with the help of our mighty mycelium. (We chose diapers to launch with because they’re the #1 household plastic waste item — they take 400+ years to decompose in a landfill, and each baby uses ~6,000 diapers in their lifetime. Wild, right?)

We’re looking for an inspired, art-forward, non-jaded graphic designer / multimedia designer / artist who is eager to work at a mission-driven startup. This role is perfect for an up-and-coming designer with 2+ years of experience looking to help build an iconic brand from the ground up.

You’ll work closely with our Chief Creative Officer (Miki Agrawal) and our Head of Growth & Partnerships to translate our brand’s creative vision into artful assets across digital, print, packaging, and campaign collateral. Your work will turn nature (and baby diapers!) into compelling, emotionally resonant creative that connects with modern consumers.

You thrive in a creative, ever-evolving workplace filled with environmentalists and science nerds. You’re fluent in digital and visual storytelling, comfortable with photography and video concepts, and excited to help build a category-defining brand.

Responsibilities

  • Support and translate the CCO’s creative direction into compelling assets across brand, web, and marketing
  • Design graphics for the website, email, paid ads, packaging, social media, and creative campaigns
  • Help develop a visual identity that feels bold, fun, and deeply aligned with our sustainability mission
  • Collaborate across departments (growth, ops, product) to ensure assets are aligned with both brand and marketing goals
  • Help organize and art direct shoots (product, lifestyle) to bring the brand to life
  • Continuously evolve our brand toolkit, proposing fresh ideas and visuals
  • Stay current with design trends and creative tools
  • Support the rollout of new sub-brands and special projects (like the Institute for Generative Innovation)
  • Bring a sense of joy and creativity to everything you touch — from baby poop memes to fungi-inspired art

Requirements

  • 2+ years of professional graphic design experience, ideally with a lifestyle or DTC consumer brand or agency (will consider less with an impressive portfolio)
  • Strong visual portfolio showcasing branding, marketing, and digital design work
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite and Figma (or similar); video editing a bonus
  • A high creative bar with strong marketing sensibilities
  • Organized, process-oriented, and self-motivated
  • Clear communicator and proactive collaborator
  • Kind, open, and culture-positive — someone who lifts the team up
  • Comfort with irreverent, nature-inspired, and baby-poop-adjacent branding

Benefits

  • Medical and dental insurance
  • Paid time off: 2 weeks vacation + 11 federal holidays
  • The chance to help build a category-defining, mission-driven brand from the ground up

Our Mission & Values

Mission: HIRO Technologies helps solve the global plastic crisis with nature-based technologies and disruptive consumer products.

Vision: HIRO Technologies will become the global supplier of safe and sustainable plastic-eating fungi.

Our “Spore” Commitment:

  • We care like no one is watching. We’re earth stewards who give a shit about each other and the planet.
  • We come in hot like a dog with a bone. We get shit done. Venga, vámonos!
  • We’re open to new possibilities because we’re just playing. Let’s throw shit at the wall!
  • We’re fun as shit because life is short. Enjoy every day!

Hiring Process

Please include a cover letter and portfolio with your application.

Open to U.S.-based candidates with work authorization, or international candidates working as contractors from outside the U.S.

As part of our hiring process, shortlisted candidates complete a paid design challenge that reflects real product problems and workflows at HIRO. Final submissions are personally reviewed by our founder, Miki, with a strong emphasis on craft, product thinking, and attention to detail.
