The Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR) carries out research on a wide array of infectious diseases, including emerging infectious diseases, HIV, malaria, and other infectious pathogens, and on diverse aspects of brain and behavioral health, including sleep, traumatic brain injury prevention/treatment, and psychological resilience. WRAIR’s Emerging Infectious Diseases Branch (EIDB) provides an opportunity to learn about the administrative aspect of biomedical science research focused on the detection, prevention, and treatment of emerging infectious diseases such as SARS-CoV-2, Zika virus, Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) virus, Covid-19 and others. EIDB has primary responsibility for identifying and responding to a variety of novel pathogens that threaten Soldier health and world health. This includes surveillance efforts across the globe as well as rapid countermeasure development.
Under the guidance of a mentor, this learning experience will provide an opportunity to apply a science background to the management and administration of scientific research and create a new competency. This opportunity will prepare the ORISE EIDB fellow for future positions in research management/administration offices within academia, industry, or the federal government. As an ORISE EIDB fellow, you will be trained to develop and write grant proposals for a variety of funding agencies in support of EIDB research projects, organize interdisciplinary teams and working groups to facilitate EIDB’s research mission, write preclinical animal model protocols, and monitor and report cost, schedule, and performance progress on a variety of research projects.
- Develop a comprehensive understanding of scientific portfolios in biomedical research, including basic science, epidemiological surveillance, and preclinical and clinical studies of vaccines and treatments for emerging infectious diseases
- Gain an understanding of the multidisciplinary scientific process for addressing emerging infectious diseases through the development of platforms for prevention, detection, and treatment of novel diseases threats
- Participate with mentors to improve scientific administration processes and procedures with a focus on cost, schedule, and performance of projects within the emerging infectious diseases portfolio
- Help to develop, write, and monitor preclinical animal model protocols adhering to regulatory and Institute Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) guidelines and procedures
Please note: The initial appointment is for one year, but the appointment may be renewed up to a total of three years. The appointment is full-time at WRAIR in Silver Spring, MD.

This appointment is a 12-month research appointment, with the possibility to be renewed for additional research periods. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.
Participants will receive a stipend to be determined by WRAIR. Stipends are typically based on the participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. Other benefits may include the following:

Nature of Appointment
The participant will not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DOD, or any other office or agency. Instead, the participant will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.
Candidates must have received at least a master’s degree in a biomedical research field (biology, pharmacology, microbiology, virology, molecular biology, clinical research, or other biomedical sciences) within five years of the appointment start date. Applicants must have superior academic performance, excellent communication (oral and written) skills and organizational skills, an the ability to be a team player.
It would be desirable for the candidate to have a background in biomedical research and an strong interest in research administration and leadership. Experience in preclinical animal model development and familiarity with Animal Care and Use regulations and guidelines is preferred. A doctorate level degree is desirable.
