Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) with Alternative Certification

Full Scholarship Opportunity Available

Priority Application Deadline: March 1

Regular Application Deadline: April 1

Program Overview

SLU’s Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) degree with Alternative Certification is designed to enable non-education undergraduates with various subject area degrees to seek teaching certification via an alternative route. Whether your bachelors was in English, History, Math, Science, Music, Physical Education, or Art, SLU’s MAT program will allow you to:

  • Obtain your master’s degree while earning a full-time teaching salary of $38K or more starting in August 2021 with one of our partner districts
  • Hone the pedagogical and research skills needed to positively impact students and your community
  • Upon successful completion of the program and state assessments, earn Missouri teaching certification and see an average $4K salary increase

Program Format

At SLU, we know the classroom is the best place to apply theory to practice.

  • 2 year, 32 credit program starts in June
  • Summer courses prepare students to step into their own classroom in August
  • 1 evening course per fall and spring semester to accommodate a teacher’s schedule
  • Content-specific coaching allows for real-time feedback on teaching methods and classroom management style

Potential District Partners

  • Ferguson/Florissant
  • Jennings
  • Maplewood
  • Normandy
  • St. Louis Public Schools
  • Ritenour
  • Riverview Gardens
  • University City

Funding your MAT

With a competitive tuition rate of $600 per credit hour and with fewer credits than the average MAT, you can obtain a high-quality degree for less than 10K per year.

  • Through the SLU-SLPS STEM Teaching Fellows Program, SLPS teachers pursuing positions in math or science in grades 6-12 can qualify for full-tuition scholarships
  • All applicants are reviewed for a scholarship at the time of admission
