Graduate Practicum/Internship with Special Needs Population (pre-K-young adult & families)

This position is for graduate students who would like more experience working with the special needs population ranging from PreK through 12th and 18-30 (young adult) and accompanying family members. Additionally, this position can be used as a family counseling position, family support group position, young adult group counseling, and individual career and skill training position along with counseling on the individual or group level. Depending on the clients and the interns skills there is also an opportunity to work with the Transitional Housing young adults. Also there is opportunities to work remotely for some portions due to the COVID restrictions but also the client’s needs.This position is one best designed for a graduate student who will be with our sites for 6 or more months so that they can mature into their skills. Typically this position is designed for those wanting an in depth experience and is quite hands on. This position can accommodate those applying to eventual licensure as a LPC, LMFT, ABA, LP, LSMW, BCBA, rehab field with disabilities, or other clinical field. It can also accommodate other fields for those wanting more direct experience.This position also can be tailored for certain fields that do not require a counseling need or background, but would like to work directly with special needs ages 18-30, Pre-K-12th, and accompanying family members. However for those working towards a clinical or mental health licensure, a broad experience is typically what is aimed for that would include counseling cases (individual and family), therapist for a social skills group, and support groups.Those applying for this position should recognize that UTH has 2 sites and based on your number of needed hours may need to be available to drive to both the Frisco and the Denton location. UTH is in the midst of developing further it’s young adult and family support options. Those individuals wishing to be part of this initiative should be willing to be open minded and hard working to help existing staff create programs that are most beneficial now and in the future. Those individuals with the most flexibility will more easily accommodated.www.unitedthroughhope.org has an overview of all programs that an individual may be involved in.The volunteer will be present at our site at least 12-15 hours per week (depending on their own program requirements) plus will need to be willing to read their emails to be prepared for the group lesson each week. Volunteers who succeed in this position are reliable, punctual, enjoy those with special needs & have an even temperament, and great communication. This position is for those individuals who are good at taking initiative and thinking ahead.Training in disabilities and the program will be provided. Due to the nature of our clientele, a resume and a volunteer form will be required to be completed for this position as well as an observation at our site during the program will be required before a commitment can be made. This position can be a volunteer position or used for class credit, practicum, or internship.
