Research/Fellowship Expires February 2, 2021

The Doris Duke Conservation Scholars Program at the University of Washington is a diverse, committed, and creative community from around the country that aims to change the face and future of conservation.

What we do: We support emerging conservation scholars in developing innovative perspectives and skills by providing opportunities to explore nature conservation and its relationship to environmental justice in both urban and rural contexts. We apply critical analysis to human interactions with each other and the rest of the natural world to help scholars find a conservation practice and career path that is right for them.

Who we’re looking for: We are looking for 20 undergraduates who reflect cross-cultural perspectives with an emphasis on students from historically excluded groups in the conservation field.

The details

  • Two-summer program (June – August) and academic year support
  • Professional development & internship opportunities
  • Stipend of $4,400 / summer
  • All expenses paid

More about the program

  • First Summer 2021 Distance Learning Program* : The first summer is designed to expose scholars to a wide range of conservation issues, the complex physical and cultural landscapes that conservation solutions emerge from, and work together to untangle the societal frameworks and forces that drive conservation. Learn more here:
  • Second Summer: The second summer is designed to build upon the analysis of the first summer, explore career pathways, and cultivate a community of practice. Concurrent with their internships, scholars also engage in DDCSP @ UW programming that aims to strengthen individual and collective agency for change. Learn more here:

*In response to COVID-19 safety concerns and adherence to state and University response plans, we have decided to once again offer our first summer experience as a distance learning program. If it becomes safe and feasible to do so, we may resume in-person learning in Washington state for the final weeks of the program. More details on our distance learning program can be found here.
