The City and County of Denver is seeking Short-Term Shelter Assistants to support people coming to Denver from Central and South America. These positions will directly support these efforts. All positions are on-call and will work no more than 39 hours per week without prior approval and are not eligible for benefits. On-call positions may have routine or variable work schedules. This position should expect to work a minimum of 24 hours and up to 39 hours weekly, depending on employee availability and the needs of the department.
The Short-Term Shelter Assistant is an on-call short-term position within Denver Human Services. This position will pay $25.00/hour and will start upon completion of pre-employment process. This position is contingent on ongoing needs and funding.
Position Summary
The Short-Term Shelter Assistant is responsible for functions and duties relating to the daily operation of the shelter, including the needs of the guests, and the activities that take place therein. These positions must support guests and participants with transparency and compassion. They will also have the ability to work collaboratively with people from various backgrounds and experiences, and with people who are facing instability or may be in distress. In this on-call position you will work 8 – hour shifts. Shifts include nights and weekends. Sensitivity to language barriers and cultural differences is also valued.
The Short-Term Shelter Assistant should be prepared to be on their feet for a significant amount of time throughout each shift. These positions may be asked to lift and move supplies, communicate information to clients, facilitate meals to guests, clean/sanitize common areas and other duties as assigned. Masks must be worn at all times indoors during working hours.
Short-Term Shelter Assistants will perform the following duties, among others:
- Check-in new guests
- Provide information, directions, instructions, and tours of the facility
- Show guests to their sleeping area and provide them with essential items
- Explain the rules and expectations on the premises, and follow them
- Promote physical distancing whenever possible and encourage residents to wear masks at all times
- Schedule residents for daily activities and services
- Walk through the premises on a regular basis and report any concerns
- Serve meals to residents
- Sort and distribute supplies
- Provide answers and resources
- Clean and sanitize areas as assigned, including emptying trash/recycling
About You
Our ideal candidate will have:
- Bilingual preferred. Able to read, write, and speak proficiently in both Spanish and English
- Previous experience in a customer service capacity
- Ability to engage, embrace, and celebrate the culture, ethnic diversity, and community values of the Denver area and beyond
- Positive, friendly attitude and able to adapt easily and quickly to changing situations and environment
- Open and flexible schedule
- Must be able to work a minimum of 24 hours per week
- Access to transportation in the Denver metro area
- Available to work immediately
