GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
The Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM) is an emergency response entity, and this status can affect working hours, travel and change in duties as needed. Under general direction, the Finance Student Worker will develop and maintain a consistent and effective reconciliation and monitoring system to ensure all system interfaces function as intended. Investigates and resolves all errors, mis-feeds, and other interface exceptions. Prepares journal entries as needed.
This position reports to the Accounting Manager, AP and Reporting.
Work is restricted to college students. Priorities or class schedules to be submitted on a weekly basis. Work schedule and work adjustments subject to prior approval. Work is performed at the TDEM Headquarters located in Austin, Texas.
**This position is not eligible for benefits. Work hours may increase from, up to 19 hours, to up to 40 hours, in-between semester breaks.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Learns the FAMIS accounting system to ensure maximum efficiency and effectiveness and to maintain the integrity of the agency’s account records.
- Develops and maintains a consistent and effective reconciliation and monitory system to ensure all system interfaces function as intended. Investigates and resolves all errors.
- Produces periodic reconciliations and management reports as required.
- Audits reports as needed.
- Benchmarks best practices to assist in evaluation of current process and recommendation of changes to improve operational efficiencies.
- Prepares and enters journal entries, voucher corrections, cash receipts, and other necessary journal entries into the financial accounting system.
- Reconciles accounts and banks.
- Ability to travel (5 %).
- Face-to-face and person-to-person interactions are required.
- Maintains a regular course of attendance during assigned work schedule.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education – High school or GED. Current student enrollment in an accounting or business-related field at an accredited institution of higher education.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Strong and effective communication skills.
- Proficiency in MS Office.
- Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles.
- Ability to anticipate and identify issues and problem solve.
- Ability to work independently.
- Ability to communicate with tact and diplomacy.
