Freelance Opportunity: Data Scientist

About the Role

At Uber, we don’t just move people and things; we move the world of AI forward. The AI Solutions team is looking for a high-caliber Data Scientist who functions as a technical architect and a strategic visionary.

In this role, you won’t just be building models—you will be architecting the roadmap for our data-driven evolution. You will sit at the intersection of complex algorithmic research and real-world business impact, ensuring that our AI initiatives are scalable, ethical, and aligned with Uber’s global KPIs.

What You’ll Do

  • Lead & Elevate: Direct a high-performing team of Data Scientists and Analysts. You’ll be responsible for technical mentorship, rigorous code reviews, and fostering a culture of engineering excellence.
  • Strategic Roadmap Ownership: Define the long-term data science strategy. You will manage the end-to-end lifecycle of AI products, from initial hypothesis to production-grade deployment.
  • Technical Execution: Oversee the development of scalable machine learning models. You’ll ensure our frameworks maintain the highest standards for data integrity and algorithmic fairness.
  • Stakeholder Synthesis: Act as the “translator” between deep technical research and executive strategy. You will craft actionable narratives that help leadership make billion-dollar decisions.

Project details

  • Location: Remote (You must be based in the United States).
  • Exclusionary states: We’re currently not sourcing candidates in California.
  • Commitment: 20–35 hours per week.
  • Type: Freelance / Independent contractor (IC) engagement.

Basic Qualifications

  • Quantitative Mastery: PhD or MS in Statistics, Computer Science, Economics, or a related quantitative field.
  • Managerial Excellence: 3+ years of experience leading technical teams or overseeing large-scale data programs in an Agile environment.
  • Technical Toolkit: Advanced proficiency in Python or R, and SQL.
  • ML Expertise: Deep experience with modern frameworks such as PyTorch, TensorFlow, or Scikit-learn.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Product Intuition: A proven track record of prioritizing high-impact projects that balance short-term wins with long-term technical debt.
  • Scalability Mindset: Experience working with large-scale distributed systems and high-dimensional datasets.
  • Communication: Exceptional ability to visualize data and communicate complex technical concepts to non-technical audiences.

Why Uber?

We offer the opportunity to work on some of the most challenging problems in the tech industry. From optimizing global logistics to pioneering autonomous movement, your work here will impact millions of lives every day.

Uber is an equal opportunity employer. We celebrate diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees.
